Lifson exhibit to open May 11 at Paul Engle Center

The works of Cornell College emeritus art professor Hugh Lifson will be on display at the Paul Engle Center for Neighborhood Arts beginning with an opening reception on Friday, May 11 from 5-7 p.m.

Entitled “Self Portrait and Other Places,” the exhibit includes more than 40 original collages and paintings recording various places Lifson has been, either in his mind or actually. Many reflect his trademark technique – acrylics and found objects wrapped in layers of plastic.

Lifson, of Mount Vernon, has shown internationally, nationally and regionally during and since a 35-year career as a Cornell art professor. He was recently the first Cornell faculty artist-in-residence at the Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts in Nebraska City, Neb. He’ll become the first Cornellian to exhibit at the neighborhood arts center named in honor of legendary Coe College alumnus Paul Engle.

Lifson has shown in major museums such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, the Nelson Atkins Gallery and the City Art Museum in St. Louis. Locally, he is represented in the collections of Cornell, Coe College, Kirkwood Community College, the Figge Art Museum in Davenport, the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, and the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art, as well as several private collections.

The reception will feature music performed by Coe students Nathan Barford, violin; Sarah Wedgewood, violin; JoAnna Cochenet, viola; and Allie Brown, cello. Refreshments will be provided by Sodexho Campus Services at Coe. Following the reception, the exhibit will be open by appointment through June 16.

Located at 1600 Fourth Ave. SE, the Paul Engle Center for Neighborhood Arts, serves as a meeting place for residents of the immediate neighborhood and the greater community for a variety of arts related and social functions.

The reception is free and open to the public. The exhibit is co-sponsored by the Communities in Partnership Fund of The Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation. Tax-deductible donations to benefit the center will be accepted. For more information call (319) 366-1836.

Congratulations Student Composer Competition Winners

Competitions

In February, the Iowa Composers Forum announced the winners of its 12th annual Student Composers Competition. The Forum is working to coordinate performances of the 1st and 2nd place pieces in each category at a 10 am concert on April 7th at the UNI Festival. The winners in each category will receive a savings bond ranging from $50 to $200.

Clayton Dryden, a second grader from Marion, IA won the competition’s Elementary Division for his composition River, Come. Clayton is a student of Matt Wheeler.

First prize in the Junior High Division went to Danielle Orihuela, an eighth grade student of Bonnie Johansen-Werner, for her work Flute Sonata. Katie Mallon, another eighth grader, was awarded second place in the Junior Division for her composition Voices of the Past. Two honorable mentions were awarded in the junior high division to Emilee Droegmiller and Cheyanne Porter—both students of Denise Knaack.

Michael Gilbertson is certainly no stranger to the annual composition competition. The Dubuque composer received first prize in the Senior High Division for his work Overture for Orchestra. Michael studies with Tracey Rush. Matt Wheeler, another steady contender in the annual competition, received second prize in the Senior Division for his clarinet and piano work titled Postcards from Chicago. Matt, a Hiawatha resident, studies composition with Joseph Dangerfield. Philip Bergman, an 11th grader, received an honorable mention award in this division for his String Quartet No. 1.

In the newly added College Division, three awards were presented. First place went to Cedar Rapids composer Luke Gullickson for his composition Four Preludes for Piano. Luke currently studies with David Vayo at Illinois Wesleyan University. Jennifer Edmondson, of Ames, was the recipient of the second place award for Duo. Jennifer studies with Christopher Hopkins at Iowa State University. JoAnna Cochenet, a student of Michael Kimber, earned an honorable mention in the college division.

A hearty congratulations to all of the participants! We look forward to hearing your works at the festival!

Nice website! Fun to see all of your pictures. It makes you come to life!

Trio/Quartet Recital April 11th, 2007, 3:00 p.m.

Held in D-K Auditorium at Coe College this April, the Alma Turechek String Ensembles performed for a friendly audience.  That day we started out by touring to a middle school in the area to perform some of the program for the young.  After our afternoon recital, we went to an assisted living home, Cottage Grove Place, and played a variety for dinner music.  Here are some pictures of the before, during, and after of preparing for these performances.
